I’ll let you in on a little secret – I have a huge regret about going vegan.
But, before I get to that, I want to tell you about the things that I don’t regret.
This is a big one. Before I was vegan, I think I was stuck in a rut cooking-wise. I would cook the same things over and over. After going vegan, I was worried that my meals would be even less exciting and my greatest fear was that I’d be eating salad forever. So, I poured over countless recipes, subscribed to as many vegan blogs as I could find, bought new cookbooks and spent some time in the kitchen perfecting new recipes.
The end result? My meals are more delicious than ever! Plus, I continue testing out new recipes on the regular which keeps my meals fresh and exciting. Of course, I always have my “go-to” recipes at the ready whenever I’m in a pinch and am not sure what to make.
I am so glad I took the time to experiment with cooking so that I can make food that satisfies even the most discerning omnivore (aka my husband)!
Learning about ingredients
This was an eye-opener. Sometimes I pick up a product at the grocery store and scan the ingredients list only to realize that it contains animals by-products. It was SHOCKING to me to discover how many things contain animal by-products – I mean apple juice?! Why is that necessary?!
Some brands of apple juice are clarified with an ingredient called isinglass; the dried swim bladder of a fish. Eww!
Finding out how prolific animal by-products are in processed foods was an eye-opener for me and really pushed me to make and eat (for the most part) a whole-food plant based diet. (Thank-goodness oreos are vegan though because I am never giving those up!)
Learn what your food is made of (even if you aren’t vegan) so you can make informed decisions about what you are putting in your body. I am really glad to have learned how processed food is incredibly reliant (even when not necessary!) on animal by-products.
I learned that, when I make decisions that are in alignment with my morals and values, those decisions are the easiest to stick with. Afterall, it makes sense; when you believe in something with your whole heart, it becomes easy (if not a joy) to do. My choices are reflexive and the alignment I feel gives me a sense of contentment and peace.
Ok, here it is.
What I deeply regret about going vegan is that I didn’t go vegan sooner. For years I cooked and ate meat, bought leather, wore down and fur (eek!) and looking back now it’s, well, embarrassing. I still can’t fathom how I reconciled eating and wearing animals with loving animals… but I suppose the brain is powerful enough to help you look the other way when years of habits, patterns and routines are ingrained in you.
I’m so happy with the way I’m living now and, if you are considering making the leap, I hope you’ll give it a shot sooner than later. After all, I don’t want you to share the same regret as me!
