Welcoming Challenges

Every challenging situation gives us the opportunity to grow and discover a new strength, a creative solution or a new way of looking at things. A challenge can motivate you to be better, stronger, tougher, more caring, more empathetic or more giving than you ever thought you could be.

Challenges Are Gonna happen

As a vegan, I’m often challenged; by people, concepts, product availability – you name it! If you’re a new vegan like me or a vegan virgin, this might be something you haven’t thought about. But trust me, it’s worth a minute or two!

When someone says something that is offensive, annoying or just plain dumb it’s a good idea to think about how you’d like to react and what to say. And trust me, it’s gonna happen!

With every fiber of my being, I try and ensure that my reaction to these types of challenges is kindness and excitement! I don’t think negativity is going to get us anywhere so I respond with kindness – after all, I used to BE them. Asking someone to listen to you becomes infinitely harder if you’re delivering the message while upset, angry or negative. I’m not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but kindness is certainly what I aim for, always.

But what about excitement? You try to react with excitement?

Yep, excitement. I love talking to people about being vegan because THAT is my opportunity to show people how passionate I am about this lifestyle and how easy, amazing, delicious, nutritious, compassionate (the list goes on) it can be! Speaking to people in person is THE BEST way to change people’s hearts and minds so I always relish the opportunity. Plus, excitement is contagious!

Surrender

There’s another thing that a challenge can bring about in us and that’s the ability to surrender with grace. Sometimes, I can’t get my point across or the other person isn’t open to a true exchange of ideas or I’m just not having the best day (think pre-caffeination). I can’t always muster up the kindness or excitement I normally react with. In these situations, the best thing I can do is smile, nod politely and hope they discover another path to the vegan lifestyle.

Until that day, I’ll continue to think of them fondly as vegan virgins.

The Vegan Virgin, xo
